Over the past month, I have been traveling throughout New Mexico—meeting many of you in person, tabling in our churches, and preparing for our upcoming 40 Days for Life campaign beginning February 18 (sign up here). I was also honored to speak last month at the Texas Rally for Life in San Antonio, where one reality was painfully clear:

A large majority of abortions performed in New Mexico involve women traveling from out of state—many from Texas. Recent state data indicates this is well over 70%.

The flip side of this reality is just as striking: if more than 70% of abortions in New Mexico involve women from outside our state, that means only about 30% involve local residents. This is reshaping both the culture and the policies of New Mexico in ways that deeply affect our communities.

At Southwest Coalition, our team in Las Cruces is actively working to expand Her Care Connection outreach, Southwest Coalition Action, and our Guiding Star Southwest women’s health services so that women in crisis encounter real help, real care, and real hope. We are currently seeking additional office space to help ensure that New Mexico’s culture and laws reflect the true needs and dignity of its own people.

And now, Senate Bill 30 (SB 30) threatens to make this crisis even harder to confront.

SB 30 would eliminate the state’s only mandatory abortion reporting requirement.
If passed, key data about abortions in New Mexico—including scope, impact, and trends affecting our communities—could disappear from public record.

Without reporting and accountability, there is no clear public record of complications, malpractice, abuse, late-term abortions, or harm to women—the type of information that is routinely tracked in every other area of healthcare. When oversight disappears, so does responsibility. Without truth and transparency, it becomes far harder to protect women, defend the vulnerable, and expose injustice when it occurs.

This affects:

  • Transparency — Families and communities lose visibility into what is happening in our state.

  • Accountability — Harm, complications, and malpractice can remain hidden without public reporting.

  • Culture — Truth becomes harder to defend when facts are concealed.

  • Our Work — The real needs of women and families in Southern New Mexico become harder to document, address, and respond to.

This moment matters.

Simple Script You Can Use

Phone or Email Message:

Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I am a resident of [City]. I am asking Senator [Name] to please vote NO on Senate Bill 30. Removing abortion reporting eliminates transparency and public accountability in New Mexico. Without reporting, there is no oversight into complications, malpractice, or harm to women. Our communities deserve accurate data and responsible accountability. Please oppose SB 30. Thank you.

It takes less than two minutes—but your voice matters.

For those of us in El Paso, please forward this message to friends and family in New Mexico so they can take action as well.
