"Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth."
Luke 1:39–40
When I think about the beautiful calling of a doula, I cannot help but think of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Despite being newly pregnant herself, Mary traveled to be with her cousin Elizabeth, remaining with her for approximately three months. While Scripture does not tell us whether Mary assisted at Elizabeth's delivery, the Visitation gives us one of the most beautiful biblical examples of a woman accompanying another mother through pregnancy.
At Guiding Star Southwest, our doulas carry that same spirit of service, offering mothers comfort, encouragement, and support throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
Today, I'd like to introduce you to Jazman Allen, one of our dedicated doulas, who shares what inspired her to answer this special calling.

In Her Own Words
"I became a doula and birth assistant because I believe the LORD has called me to serve women, particularly those who are often overlooked, underserved, or forgotten. My heart is to walk alongside women with compassion, dignity, and love, especially those with limited access to support. I believe this is one way I am called to serve the least of these.
YHWH designed birth, and we are simply His vessels, entrusted with the privilege of serving women during such a sacred and transformative season.
At a recent birth, I had the privilege of witnessing the Holy Spirit's prompting of the midwife to recommend a hospital transfer when the mother needed more medicalized support. It was a beautiful and powerful reminder that working in unity with the Holy Spirit is essential to how I approach birth work.
Our role is not to impose our own expectations or preferences, but to remain prayerful, discerning, and obedient to His leading.
I believe we are called to steward the knowledge and skills He has given us while remaining surrendered to His wisdom and direction. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve women in this capacity and to be a vessel through which His love is made known."
- Jazman Allen.
What I love about Jazman's testimony is her humility in service, recognizing that her gifts are meant to serve God and others, just as Mary did when she visited Elizabeth.
As we approach Day 40, may we always remember that our presence in the lives of women matters. Whether through prayer, childbirth support, or shelter at The Lily Pad, we have an opportunity to make Christ's love visible.
Thank you for walking alongside these mothers. Our 40 days may be ending, but our mission of love and service continues, as does our new 365 Campaign! Come to the closing rally to learn more.

Devotional for Day 39
Intention: For doulas, midwives, and all who support expectant mothers, especially those facing childbirth alone.
Scripture: "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." Romans 12:15
Reflection: Mary traveled to be with Elizabeth during her pregnancy, reminding us that love is expressed through our presence and service. Sometimes simply being there is the greatest gift we can give.
Prayer: Lord, bless those who care for expectant mothers. Give them wisdom, compassion, and gentle hands. May every mother feel Your love through those who accompany her. Amen.
Today's Challenge: Reach out to an expectant mother and offer a simple act of kindness or practical help. Pray Psalm 51 for Dr. Theard.
